Billing & insurance
What it costs, and what to do if you cannot pay it
One bill per visit, an estimate before anything planned, and financial assistance for anyone who needs it. Applying for help does not change the care you get.
Paying a bill
The fastest route is MyWinterfield, which shows every open balance, what insurance has and has not covered, and lets you set up a plan without calling anyone.
- Online. MyWinterfield, any time.
- By phone. (619) 555-0161, weekdays 8am–5pm PT.
- By mail. Winterfield Health, PO Box 4412, San Diego, CA 92101. Write the account number on the check.
- In person. The cashier's window at any hospital, weekdays 8am–4pm.
Interest-free payment plans are available on any balance, for up to twenty-four months, and setting one up does not need a credit check. Nobody at Winterfield is paid a commission on collections.
Insurers we accept
We are in network with most major plans in the county. Coverage varies by plan tier as well as by insurer, so check with your insurer before a planned procedure. This list is a guide, not a guarantee of coverage.

| Veranta Health | Individual, employer, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid | All Winterfield sites |
| Medicare | Parts A and B, most Advantage plans | All sites |
| Medi-Cal | Managed care and fee-for-service | All sites |
| Pacific Mutual Health | PPO, HMO | HMO needs a referral for specialists |
| Harborline Benefit | PPO, employer group | All sites |

Getting an estimate before it happens
For anything planned, you are entitled to a good-faith estimate in writing before it happens, and we will produce one within three working days of you asking. Call (619) 555-0161 or ask at any registration desk.
Emergency care is the exception, for the obvious reason. You will never be asked about payment before being treated in an emergency, and you cannot be balance-billed for emergency care by an out-of-network clinician working at one of our sites.
Financial assistance
If you cannot pay, we will reduce or write off the bill. This is not a hardship exception granted reluctantly; it is a published policy with published thresholds, and roughly one bill in nine at Winterfield is reduced under it.
| Household income | You pay |
|---|---|
| Up to 200% | Nothing. The balance is written off in full. |
| 201% to 300% | 20% of the discounted rate, capped at $500 per visit. |
| 301% to 400% | 40% of the discounted rate, capped at $1,200 per visit. |
| Above 400% | Case by case. Apply anyway if the bill is large relative to your income. |
To apply, call (619) 555-0161 or ask a financial counselor at any site. You will need proof of household income for the last three months. A decision takes ten working days, collections are paused while an application is open, and you can apply up to 240 days after the bill was issued, including for a bill you have already partly paid.
Common questions
Why did I get more than one bill?
You should not. Winterfield bills once per visit, covering the facility, the clinician, and any laboratory or imaging done that day. If you received a separate bill from someone else, it is likely an out-of-network clinician; call us and we will chase it rather than leaving it to you.
My insurer denied it. What now?
Call us before you pay anything. Roughly a third of denials we see are coding or eligibility problems at our end or the insurer's, and we will resubmit at no cost to you. If the denial stands, you have a right to appeal it and we will supply the clinical documentation for that appeal.
Will an unpaid bill be sent to collections?
Not for at least 240 days, not while a financial assistance application is open, and never to an agency that reports medical debt to credit bureaus. We do not sell debt.
I am uninsured. Do I pay the sticker price?
No. A self-pay discount is applied automatically before you see the bill, and the discounted amount is what financial assistance is then calculated against.
Can I get an itemized bill?
Yes, always, at no charge, and you do not have to give a reason. Ask in MyWinterfield or call the billing line.
Winterfield Health is a fictional organization built for software demonstrations. The insurers, thresholds, dollar figures, and policies on this page are invented and describe no real health system's billing practice. Nothing here is financial or legal advice.
